The Project
This research project aims to develop and evaluate innovative methods for predicting violent behavior in the community, through an interdisciplinary approach that combines psychology, criminology and Information and Communication Technologies.
In particular, the project utilizes virtual and augmented reality technologies to create controlled scenarios simulating social situations, through which data is collected regarding the cognitive, emotional and behavioral characteristics of the participants.
This data is analyzed using machine learning methods, with the aim of identifying patterns and risk factors associated with the occurrence of violent behavior.
This integrated approach seeks to contribute to improving the understanding of delinquency and to the development of scientifically proven prevention and early intervention tools, enhancing community safety and cohesion.
Results
During the implementation of the project, a comprehensive set of research, technological and educational activities were carried out that led to the development and pilot implementation of an innovative model for predicting violent behavior and training frontline professionals using Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technologies.
Initially, an extensive literature review and evaluation of international psychometric violence risk assessment tools was carried out, with the aim of recording existing knowledge and identifying bibliographic and methodological gaps.
Methodology
The research methodology was then designed and a new research tool was developed to assess the perception of threatening behaviors.
Qualitative and quantitative research procedures were implemented to develop the tool, which included conducting expert interviews, developing an interview guide, and formulating a questionnaire.
This was followed by a pilot application of the tool on police officers, as well as its application on a sample of students to evaluate its functionality and applicability. Subsequently, a main study was conducted on correctional officers with the aim of investigating the psychometric adequacy and predictive validity of the tool.
Processing
The collected data was subjected to extensive statistical processing, which included reliability analyses, factor analysis, descriptive statistics, correlations of variables, regression analyses and investigation of perceived threat indicators. Based on the results, a methodological framework was developed to transform the research findings into educational parameters and simulation scenarios.
Subsequently, Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) educational scenarios and simulations were designed and developed, which incorporated the research results and the indicators of threatening behavior recognition. At the same time, the VIODET platform was developed for the creation and implementation of interactive educational scenarios, utilizing VR/AR and Artificial Intelligence technologies.
Education
Additionally, a Standard Education and Training Model (Syllabus), educational materials and supporting learning tools were designed and developed for professionals who come into contact with incidents of violence and delinquency. The educational materials were utilized in the context of a pilot application, during which the participants successfully completed the entire educational process.
The above activities contributed to the successful completion of the physical scope of the project and the achievement of the intended research, technological and educational results.
